A big earthquake occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand this afternoon.
When I watched it on TV, I couldn't believe it
and I thought it was a part of a movie.

At least 55 people were officially confirmed dead,
with three hundred more missing,
after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake happened there.
I've also heard that some students from Japan are still missing.
It is said that the quake was the worst in 80 years in the country.

It was a devastating disaster and I am really sadden by it.
But at the same time, whenever I see disasters,
I feel my helplessness as a human.
It also reminds me of a severe earthquake which hit in Kobe, Japan in 1995.
I think that more than 6000 people died because of that.
I wonder how many peoeple in Japan still remember it.

I was surprised by how many buildings had collapsed because of this quake in New Zealand.
I think there is something wrong with their household structures.
What do you feel when you watch a disaster like this?

Here are some new phrase(s) that I have come across in daily life.
1. makeover (on TV)
= the process of improving the appearance of a person or a place
2. giveaway (on TV)
= something that a company gives free, usually with sth else that is for sale
3. drive off (on TV)
= (of a driver, car, etc.) to leave
